mount rainier engagement session | ben & kelsey

A few months ago, my Facebook page unbelievably reached 1,000 likes. I was honored that so many people took the time to follow, view, and comment on my work! In celebration of that, I decided to give away a free engagement session to one very lucky couple. After reading through a few different posts on why each couple should be chosen, I couldn't get past Ben and Kelsey! These two are major lovers of the outdoors. Midwest turned Northwest residents, they spend a lot of their time hiking, camping, kayaking, and exploring the Cascades. I knew they would be the perfect couple to work with! While their wedding will be next summer in Wisconsin, they wanted their engagement session to capture their love amongst the beauty of the great state of Washington. I spent a lot of time snowboarding on Mt. Rainier in the Paradise area this winter and had been dying to take a couple down there. The views of both Mt. Rainier and the Tatoosh Range are simply breathtaking! Early summer seemed like a good enough time for us to head down there and yielded stunning views with even a little bit of snow on the hike! I had such a wonderful time with Ben and Kelsey and they are thrilled to have photos of them enjoying what they love together. Here are some of my favorites from their session.

personal | splitboard adventures at paradise on mt rainier

I know, I know. Winter is over. On sunny days like this though, I can't seem to stop thinking about winter adventures. See for me, summer is my working season. I can barely find the time to leave my computer screen, let alone go on a hike or make it to a happy hour with friends. With that season rapidly approaching, I've been trying to savor every last bit of free time I have. Taking a walk through the neighborhood, going on a weekend bike ride, whatever I can fit in before my time is taken up by editing, shooting, traveling, answering emails, uploading photos, writing blogs, connecting with vendors, and all of the other wonderful things that my job entails. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but like everyone else, I do savor my days off.

This winter, in fact, was terrible. And winter the time that I usually look forward to the most. It's pretty depressing to see snow levels the way they are. Cherry blossoms were blooming in February, it was raining instead of snowing in January at Crystal Mountain, and I can only imagine how it's going to impact the wildfires this summer. That being said, I do think it's funny when people look at me cross-eyed after I tell them I went snowboarding in April. Yes, it was bad, but it doesn't mean there was NO snow! When you spent five years of your life living in a ski town, sliding down snow simply becomes a way of life. With ski resorts having sub-par conditions for most of the end of winter this year, I found that it was absolutely necessary to go hunting for powder in other ways. Enter Jeff and Kelly Steele. Basically I met these two through Instagram. Sounds crazy, but a mutual friend commented on some of Jeff's photos and I realized he had a wife that was a splitboarder. I've been desperately hoping to find a lady friend to splitboard with in Washington. Not that I don't like going with only boys, or girl skiers for that matter, it's just different to have another female around that is doing the same thing you are. I recognized Jeff on a particularly poor weather day up at Crystal this year. We were all lamenting the bad weather over beers at the Snorting Elk. It seemed like the best way to spend the day at the time. We got to talking and planned our first trip up to Paradise on Mt. Rainier.

Our first experience was probably one of the best days I've EVER had snowboarding. We only took a couple of lines but the powder was totally incredible that day. It had snowed about a foot and the trees looked like tasty marshmallow-ice cream cones against a brilliant blue sky. Really I couldn't think of anywhere else I wanted to be at the time! The next time we went up was just a few weeks ago in April. Visibility was nearly nothing with the fog and clouds as we were skinning up. Barely being able to see, we decided to stay low on the mountain and dropped into a skinny little chute that Jeff and Kelly named "Happy New Year Chute". All of us were completely shocked that the snow was so good. And it was April! After that it warmed up into some pretty sticky snow but the companionship and the feeling of being out in the mountains made for a pretty amazing day.

I have to say, I'm pretty stoked to have met these two. I love having Kelly around to tell me "You can do it!" as I'm struggling up a slippery kick-turn or to high five after an amazing line. There's just something different about the energy that girls bring to the table when they snowboard together and I have really missed is since leaving Jackson Hole. I can't wait to see what other memories and stories we can all create together, no matter what Mother Nature decides to hand us next season. Cheers to wonderful days in the mountains.

personal | we're engaged!!

Wow wow wow! What a week it has been. Six days ago I had one of the most exciting days of my life thus far. After photographing an absolutely fabulous wedding at Crystal Mountain last weekend (thanks Brian and Colleen!), we stayed the night and had a fantastic "Sunday Funday" as I like to call it. We woke up, had breakfast on the patio of the little mountain inn we stayed in, then headed up the gondola for some sightseeing and a round of disc golf. (Side note: if you are not a great disc golf player, do NOT play the summit course at Crystal. Not only did we loose a disc on hole one after it disappeared into a great abyss off of the mountain top, but we ended up having to hike down the entire mountain off-trail just to play these ridiculously long holes. It was fun but a VERY difficult course and also unexpected 3 hours of hiking down the entire mountain haha.) After that adventure we had some lunch at the base, ran into an old friend, and made our way home.

With a few hours of sunlight to spare, David suggested we shower and go grab a drink somewhere on a patio or watch the sunset since it was a nice day. I said I didn't want to spend money out so we decided on wandering up to our usual spot at Kerry Park, the gorgeous park that overlooks Seattle. Once we got to a very crowded park (there were people everywhere) we snuggled up in a little spot on the ledge, chatting and looking out at the city we call home. We chatted for a while, and then somehow I noticed that David was pulling something out of his pocket. At the time I was just thinking, "Is this really a proposal??" and I'm not even sure what was said or even if I answered the question but I heard cameras going off and people clapping. What??!! Such a surprise! Being the photographer that I am, I said, "I really hope someone got a photo!!" and David turned around and pointed at someone in a Mariner's hat, holding one of my cameras and long lenses. It was his sister and she had captured the whole thing! I was ecstatic at this point and the bottle of champagne that Laura had brought up made everything even more exciting. We spent the better part of the night on the phone and celebrating from afar with family and friends.

I'm so excited to be taking this next step in our relationship and can't wait to start down the path of wedding planning (that is, after I finish up with this wedding season). Cheers to getting married!!

David looking around, probably for Laura.

The big moment!

Still trying to figure out what is happening but I'm pretty excited at this point!

Pointing out Laura, I was so thrilled to see her :)
hugs & kisses, of course.

celebrating!

One of our favorite places. We live four blocks away. David was the first person to ever take me here.
